How Acupuncture Works
According to traditional Chinese philosophy our health is dependent on the body’s motivating energy (known as Qi and pronounced ‘chee’). Qi governs all essential life activities. It is the energy which animates our bodies and minds, aiding the physical muscles and organs to do their jobs as effectively as possible.
Where this flow of Qi or energy is weakened or interrupted we often experience pain or a failure of function on a physical or emotional level. The flow of Qi can be disturbed by a number of factors including emotions such as stress, anxiety or frustration, as well as more physical causes such as injury, infection, diet and excessive physical or mental exertion.
Acupuncture uses fine needles to nourish and balance the Qi, helping to restore its smooth flow throughout the body. This can be highly effective in alleviating pain and promoting the healthy functioning of our bodies, minds and emotions.
Here in the West we sometimes find it hard to accept the theory of ‘Qi’ as there is no real equivalent in Western knowledge. However, Acupuncture has been the subject of many studies in recent years which have shown it to be highly effective across a wide range of conditions. Acupuncture appears to involve a very deep system of bodily communication and to work by supporting the ability of the body to heal and balance itself.
The World Health Organisation acknowledges Acupuncture as an effective treatment for a wide range of conditions. Please refer to the ‘What It Can Treat’ page for further details.
